The Sleepy Bee Flower or Ballet Shoes as it’s commonly known is a very friendly and kind flower. It is very popular with others in the flower bed. Sew early summer for Autumn flowering. Sew in full sun. It gets its name Sleepy Bee because its sail shaped petals act as cosy beds for Dolly Town Bees over winter while they hibernate. As the petals dry back, the Bees snuggle inside forming a warm safe bed. The petals keep vibrant colours even when dry to warn off predators from eating the Bees. In return for this service the Bee pollinates the flowers. It gets its Folk Name Ballet Shoes because when in full flower it dances around the lawn from dusk until dawn in early Autumn. Other flowers in the garden like to be planted next to or near to it. Only allows Bees to sleep in its petals over winter and will eject other creatures trying to snuggle in. Very caring to other flowers.
Magical Uses:
Don’t disturb the flowers or petals over winter as Bees may be sleeping but the leaves make a lovely Tea.
